Question : Employment Generated by Industry

(a)the total direct employment generated by the industry of IT and ITES during the period from April 2005 to 2009;
(b)the number of jobs in the industry retrenched from 2014 till now along with the companies that have retrenched;
(c)the companies that obtained permission from the appropriate State Governments to retrench;
(d)whether the companies complied with the law in making payment to the laid off workers;
(e)whether the Government is taking measures to protect the present employees and future employment in this sector; and
(f)if so, the measures taken in this regard?

(a) to (f): Labour Bureau has conducted Quarterly employment Survey (QES) in the selected labour-intensive and export-oriented sectors including IT/BPO to assess the effect of economic slowdown on employment in India from January 2009 to December 2015. Twenty eight such surveys had been conducted by Labour Bureau and reports thereon released, according to which there has been a net positive change of 24.98 lakhs in employment in the IT/BPO sector during the said period.

Further, Labour Bureau initiated Revamped Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) in April, 2016 by extending scope and coverage with the objective to measure relative change in employment situation over successive quarters in sizeable segment of Non-farm Industrial economy covering 8 major sectors including IT/BPO having 10 or more workers. These 8 sectors constitute around 81 percent of the total employment of units with 10 or more workers as per the 6th Economic Census, conducted during January, 2013 to April, 2014. According to seven reports released from April 2016 to October, 2017, there has been a net addition of 38000 workers in the IT/BPO Sector during the period.
