Question : DEEMED UNIVERSITY STATUS



(a) whether the Union Government has received any proposals from the States including Jammu and Kashmir for granting deemed-to-be university status to higher educational institutions in their respective States;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise; and

(c) the present status of these proposals?

(a) & (b): Yes, Madam. There are 31 proposals received in the Ministry pertaining to different States including Jammu and Kashmir seeking Deemed to be University status. Out of these, one proposal is from Jammu and Kashmir for granting Deemed to be University status to Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Choglamsar, Leh, Ladakh under De-novo category. The state-wise breakup of these proposals is Andhra Pradesh-5, Delhi-2, Jammu & Kashmir - 1, Karnataka - 2, Kerala - 1, Madhya Pradesh - 2, Maharashtra - 5, Odisha - 2, Punjab - 1, Tamil Nadu - 5, Uttar Pradesh - 4, and Uttarakhand -1.

(c): All the proposals received in the Ministry were forwarded to University Grants Commission (UGC) for examination and recommendation under the provisions of UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2010.
