Question : Electric Buses for Public Transport

(a) whether the Government has recently introduced electric buses for public transport on pilot basis;

(b) if so, the details thereof along with the estimated cost and capacity;

(c) whether any proposal is under consideration to assist the States for running electric buses in the cities; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and time by which the above proposal is likely to be implemented?

(a) to (b) The Government of India has approved a pilot project for conversion of 12 diesel buses (10 buses of State Road Transport Undertakings, 2 mini buses for the use of Hon’ble MPs) into electric buses as retro fitment solution with total cost of Rs 1357.87 lakhs.

(c) to (d) No Madam. However, Department of Heavy Industries(DHI) has formulated a scheme namely Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME – India). The overall scheme is proposed to be implemented over a period of 6 years, till 2020, wherein it is intended to support the hybrid/electric vehicles market development and its manufacturing eco-system to achieve self-sustenance at the end of the stipulated period.

Under FAME India Scheme, DHI has formulated the framework for financing scheme for E-bus under pilot project to State Transport Corporations and Municipal Corporations, initially 50 buses under pilot project by way of funding 75% costs of bus subject to maximum of Rs. 1.5 crore is considered.
