Question : CONSTRUCTION OF DAMS



(a) the number of multi-purpose Dams built across the country so far, State-wise, year-wise;

(b) the number of families displaced due to construction of dams and the number out of them rehabilitated so far, State- wise;

(c) the reasons for not rehabilitating the remaining families; and

(d) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to rehabilitate the remaining families expeditiously?

(a) As per the National Register of Large Dams( 1994), a total of 3596 dams have been constructed in the country. Most of these dams are serving more than one of the purposes e.g. irrigation, urban, rural, industrial water supply, hydro-power generation, flood control, pisci-culture, tourism and navigation. Details of large dams built in various states during different periods are given in the statement enclosed.

(b) to (d) Being a state subject, the rehabilitation and re-settlement of people affected by construction of the dams is done by the concerned state government. The required information is not maintained at the Centre.
