(a) the level of pollution in Moradabad city due to Brass Cottage Industries; and

(b) the steps being taken by the Government to monitor and check pollution in the city?

(a) Air pollution on account of emissions from brass industries is a major problem in Moradabad city. The ambient levels of pollutants recorded by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) indicate that the concentration of Suspended Particulate Matter and Sulphur dioxide are exceeding the prescribed limits.

(b) The steps taken include the following:-

i)	Legal action has been taken against the defaulting units.	ii)	Periodic monitoring of pollution levels in Moradabad city is carried	out by the UPPCB.	iii)	About 400 acres of land have been acquired by the State Government near	Pakbara to develop new industrial area, for shifting the brass cottage	industry.
