Question : MEDIEVAL ROCK CARVINGS



(a) whether any important rock carving belonging to the medieval period has been discovered in the campus of the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi;

(b) If so, the details thereof;

(c) whether there has been any delay on the part of the Archaeological Survey of India to take steps to preserve the said findings;

(d) If so, the reasons therefor; and

(e) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to expedite the preservation work?

(a)& (b) Yes, Sir. A rock carving of a moving elephant was noticed in the Campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. Consisting of a short Devanagiri inscription assignable to 17th -18th centuries A.D which reads DASAM.

(c) & (d) No, Sir. It is not worthy of protection by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance.

(e) Question does not arise.
