In Army Medical Corps, Army Dental Corps and Military Nursing Service, women officers are recruited on both permanent and Short Service Commission basis. In other identified branches, women officers are recruited, initially, for 5 years, under Short Service Commission with the option of extension of another 5 years, subject to their fitness.

2. The scheme of grant of Short Service Commission for women was started in 1992 and initially, the commission was granted only for 5 years. However, in 1996, this Commission was made extendable to 10 years for women officers, who opt for extension and are found fit by Board of officers.
