Question : COMPLIANCE OF ILO STANDARDS



(a) whether Jute Commissioner of India has been directed to ensure compliance of ILO standards of 50 kgs (or less) packaging in jute bags;

(b) if so, the facts thereof;

(c) whether jute sector is violating these norms; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and the action taken against them?

(a) to (d): International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention No.127 prescribes the maximum permissible weight as 55 kgs. This is pending for ratification. However, efforts have been made to shift to packaging in 50 kg bags. 50 kg jute bags are being manufactured as per BIS specifications for packing wheat and paddy. As regards packing of Sugar, suitable jute bags have been developed and are awaiting final approval of Bureau of Indian Standards. Jute Bags of 50 kg capacity are being supplied by jute industry to the consumers on demand.
