Question : IMPORT OF APPLES

(

(a) the quantum of apples imported during the last three years alongwith the Indian currency paid to these foreign countries; (

(b) whether the Indian apple growers / traders have been adversely affected by these imports; (

(c) if so, whether the Government propose to reduce the import of apples in order to protect our apple growers; (

(d) if not, the reasons therefor; (

(e) the details of steps being taken / proposed to be taken to save the domestic apple growers / traders?

(b) to (e) : Import restrictions on apple have been removed in accordance with the economic liberalisation policy and in accordance with our international commitments. However, subsequent to removal of the quantitative restrictions on imports, the customs duty on imports of apples was raised from 35% to the maximum bound rate of 50% during 2000-2001. In addition, import of all primary agri products including apple has been made subject to an import permit to be issued by Department of Agriculture & Co-operation, as per Plants, Fruits, Seeds (importation in to India) Order 1989.
