Question : Gas Based Transport System

Will the Minister of URBAN DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government proposes to run the road transport system on gas across the country and if so, the details thereof;
(b) the total amount being spent in transport sector in the country at present;
(c) whether the Government proposes to set up Gas plants in all the States; and
(d) if so, the details thereof and the time by which the plants are likely to be set up?

(a): No, Madam.
(b): Transport sector comprises of roads, highways, urban transport, rural transport, railways, civil aviation, waterways, non-motorised transport etc. Data on expenditure in transport sector is not maintained. However, as per the “India Transport Report” prepared by the National Transport Development Policy Committee

(NTDPC) and submitted to the then Planning Commission, the annual investment in transport infrastructure was Rs.6 trillion ($100 billion) during 2011-12.
(c) & (d): No, Madam. Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has informed that the Government of India has prioritized the domestic gas allocation for City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities and has also issued guidelines wherein requirement of CGD entities for CNG (transport) segment is being met through domestic gas. They have authorized 67 Geographical Areas (GAs), so far, for CGD network so that compressed natural gas (CNG)/ piped natural gas (PNG) services can be made available in the cities and other parts of the district.
