Question : Screening of Diabetes

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether any special technique has been evolved by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in association with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi for testing/screening of diabetes;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the time by which the said technique is likely to be made available for public?

(a) to (c): As informed by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism, AIIMS, New Delhi in collaboration with Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi has done a research project where saliva is used for measurement of glucose in human and has developed an equipment for measurement of glucose in saliva. Results of studies carried out on diabetic as well as non-diabetic subjects in AIIMS, New Delhi showed a good correlation with blood glucose. As informed by AIIMS, New Delhi, the project is in a developmental research stage.
