Question : Yoga Teaching in Universities

(a) whether the University Grants Commission (UGC) has written to all universities that
yoga teaching may be included in bachelors’ and masters'' programmes of physiotherapy,
if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether UGC has taken a decision to incorporate yoga in the list of recognised
degrees, if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether UGC has constituted a committee of experts in consultation with the
concerned department for creation of good quality text books and manuals for yoga
syllabus; and
(d) if so, the details thereof

(a) to (d) : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has informed that it has written to
the Vice-Chancellors of all Universities on 19th May, 2016 for including Yoga in the
syllabus of Bachelors of Physiotherapy (BPT) and Masters of Physiotherapy (MPT) as
they deem fit. The committee constituted by the MHRD under the Chairmanship of
Prof. H.R. Nagendra had recommended introduction of Bachelors, Masters and
Doctorate degree in Yoga by following the UGC Regulations on Specification of
Degrees of 2014.
The creation of text books and manuals of instruction is under the domain of the
Universities, they being autonomous in nature.
