Question : SEIZURE OF JEWELLERY AT INDO PAK BORDER



(a) whether there are reports of seizure of jewellery at Indo-Pak border from Indian or Pakistani women crossing the border to attend family functions in another country;

(b) if so, the details thereof along with the reasons therefor; and

(c) the measures taken by the Government to stop this practice by the security personnel along the said border in the State of Rajasthan?

(a) to (c) The Border Security Force(BSF) is the border guarding force along the Indo-Pakistan Border. The BSF has reported no such cases of seizure of jewellery along the Indo-Pakistan Border. The Central Border Excise and Customs have reported that no cases have been booked during the years 2011-2012, 2012-13 and the current year up to October, 2013. However, in the year 2010-11, 3 cases of seizure of jewellery from women due to improper importation under Section 111 of the Customs Act, 1962 and contravention of baggage rules were detected. The said cases have been adjudicated and goods were released on payment of Redemption Fine and Penalty. The Customs Authorities act as per provisions of Customs Act to prevent smuggling of all contrabands. The checking of persons, their luggage and rummaging of vehicles/ trains at Attari and Munabao are carried out by Customs Department whereas the veracity of personal identity/ documents of persons crossing the International Border is done by the immigration Department.
