Question : TRAINING FOR TALENTED CHILDREN IN SPORTS



(a) whether the Government proposes to introduce any scheme to impart sports training alongwith academic education to the talented children in sports;

(b) if so, the details thereof, schemewise and State-wise; and

(c) the names of the States where such schemes have been implemented?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS (SHRI PRATIK PRAKASHBAPU PATIL)

(a) to (c): The National Education Policy 1986 and the National Curriculum Framework 2005 already provide that sports and physical education are an integral part of the learning process, and are necessary for overall development of learners. As for scouting sports talent among school children, Sports Authority of India (SAI) is implementing following schemes:

(i) National Sports Talent Contest (NSTC)

(ii) Army Boys Sports Company

(iii) SAI Training Centres (STC)

(iv) Special Area Games (SAG),

(v) Extension Centres of STC/SAG,

(vi) Centres of Excellence

Number of trainees, both residential and non-residential, at various SAI centres in the country during 2008-09 was 14868, State-wise break-up is given in the Annexure.
