Question : CONSUMPTION OF DRINKING WATER FROM UNSAFE SOURCES



(a) the percentage of population in the country consuming drinking water from polluted water sources such as open wells, ponds, canals, etc. in rural areas, cate- gory wise and State/UT-wise separately;

(b) the scheme of the Government to supply safe drinking water in areas with excessive polluted drinking water; and

(c) the percentage of population in rural areas getting supply of safe drinking water through pipelines at present?

(a) As reported by States into the Online Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) of the Ministry, as on 5/3/2015, the percentage of rural population having access to open wells,ponds and canals in the country are 4.93%, 0.05%, and 0.58% respectively. State-wise details of these category of sou- rces is at Annexure. Data regarding pollution of these water sources is not maintained in the Ministry.

(b) If the sources are biologically conta- minated, the States have been advised to adopt disinfection practices. If the sour- ces are chemically contaminated, safe drinking water is provided from alternate safe source or through water purification plants.

(c) The percentage of population in rural areas getting safe drinking water through pipelines as on 5/3/2015 excluding infor- mation of rural areas from Union Terri- tories of Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Delhi, as reported by States in the Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) of the Ministry is 52.28%.
