Question : Demand of IT Professionals

Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state:

(a) whether there has been a decline in the demand of Information Technology (IT) professionals in the country and in international market;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;
(c) whether computer software and service industry of any other country including United Kingdom have offered partnership to Indian software industry in e-commerce banking, medicine and telecommunication sectors and if so, the details thereof;
(d) whether the IT professionals of the country will get employment in the said countries and if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the steps being taken by the Government for preparation of such an environment so that demand arises in the said sector and suitable employment is given in IT industry?

Answer given by the minister

(a) and (b): No, Sir. According to National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), the IT-ITeS industry directly employs around 41.4 lakh persons, with an addition of around 1.7 lakh persons in FY 2018-19. It is estimated that the industry will remain a net hirer in FY 2019-20.

(c) and (d): NASSCOM and other industry bodies work with their counterpart associations in other countries for market promotion. In April 2018, TechUK (Technology companies association in United Kingdom) and NASSCOM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on technology skills & development.

(e): Government initiatives such as Digital India, Make in India, Start-up India, Smart Cities, Promotion of Digital Economy and e-Governance programmes has provided growth opportunities to IT industry. Further, Government has launched “National Policy on Software Products 2019” with a vision to make India a global player in software development, production, supply of innovative and efficient Software Products.
