Question : MODERNISATION AND UPGRADATION OF AIRPORTS



(a) whether the Government has taken up modernisation and upgradation of various airports in metro and non-metro cities across the country;

(b) if so, the details of such works taken up by the Government during the last three years and the current year, State/UT-wise along with their present status and the criteria adopted for modernisation and upgradation of these airports; and

(c) the details of funds sanctioned/expenditure incurred on these airport projects during the said period, State/UTwise along with the timeframe fixed for completion of these projects?

(a) to (c) : Yes, Madam. Modernisation and development of airports is a continuous process and is undertaken by Airports Authority of India (AAI) from time to time depending upon commercial viability, traffic demand, availability of land etc. The details of projects taken up by AAI for modernisation / upgradation of airports during the last three years and current year, State/UT-wise along with their present status and details of funds sanctioned/expenditure incurred for each of these airport projects are at Annexure-I.

The criteria adopted for development/modernisation of airports include projected future demand of passenger and cargo traffic, facility to operate higher category aircraft, enhancement of operational capacity from fair weather to all weather conditions, creation of integrated terminal for both domestic and international nasseneers etc.
