Question : New Textile Policy for Textile Workers


(a) whether the Government has any proposal to unveil a New Textile Policy for Handicraft Workers/Artisans to boost the handicraft industry;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the quantum of funds proposed to be allocated for new initiatives to be taken under the new Policy?

(a): Yes, Madam. The Government proposes to unveil a new National Textile Policy, which will also cover handicrafts artisans to boost the Handicraft Industry.

(b): In order to overcome the major challenges like unorganized production and marketing, lack of infrastructure facilities, inadequate raw material at reasonable prices, absence of brand image, undeveloped domestic market and also growing competition from international players and to put the handicrafts sector on higher growth trajectory, the policy will focus on a three pronged approaches:-

i. Expansion of production base for utility-based interior- decoration, life-style by quality production of handicrafts products.

ii. Promoting premium handicrafts products for the niche market.

iii. Preservation and protection of heritage/endangered crafts.


(c): Providing budget is a separate annual exercise in line with Policy.
