Question : SALE OF INFANTS



(a) whether some cases of selling of infants has been reported in Mumbai, Orissa and other States;

(b) if so, the details thereof?

(c) the actions being taken against the accused doctors;

(d) whether the Government have ordered any inquiry in this regard; and

(e) if so, the steps being taken by the Government to stop such incidents?

(a), (b) & (c) Recently there have been some News Paper reports of selling children in Orissa due to poverty. As per these reports a person sold two such children to another person. It is also reported that these children were rescued. Further the Government of Madhya Pradesh has also raided a Hospital in Bhopal trying to give away newborn infants for monetary considerations. Two doctors from the Hospital have been arrested.


(d) The Ministry has asked the Government of Madhya Pradesh to send us details of the above case involving the Hospital.

(e) The Ministry has been issuing instructions to all State Governments from time to time to ensure that no Nursing Home or Hospital is allowed to indulge in illegal activities such as handing over of newborn babies to people allegedly wanting to adopt them. The State Governments have been asked to ensure that all Nursing Homes and Hospitals falling within their jurisdictions adhere to these instructions. The Ministry has also asked all State Governments to strictly monitor the activities of all Orphanages and Adoption Agencies.
