(a) & (b): The Government of India had taken over control of 17 Regional
Engineering Colleges (RECs) and rechristened them as the National Institutes of
Technology (NITs) in May, 2003. Subsequently, Bihar College of Engineering –
Patna (Bihar), Government Engineering College – Raipur (Chhattisgarh) and
Government Engineering College – Agartala (Tripura) were also upgraded into
the NITs in the years 2004, 2005 and 2006, respectively. During the XIth and
XIIth Plans, 11 new NITs have been established in the remaining States and
Union Territories (UTs) of Delhi and Puducherry. Thus, at present, 31 NITs are
functioning in various parts of the country as per details given in Annexure.
(c) : NITs form a very important segment among the premier Technical
Institutions to promote high quality technical Education and Research. At
present, more than 99,000 students are pursuing education in various disciplines
of engineering, science, technology and research to meet the regional and
national technical manpower requirements.
