STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (f) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 364 FOR 22ND AUGUST 2005 REGARDING MODERNIZATION OF FPI


Modernization of technology in the food processing industries is an ongoing process. However, Government has formulated and implemented a scheme for technology upgradation / establishment / modernization of FPI units in the country. Under the scheme financial assistance @25% of the project cost in general areas and 33.33% in difficult areas is provided subject to a maximum of Rs. 50.00 lakh and Rs. 75.00 lakh respectively. The scheme is project specific not State / area specific. Accordingly assistance is provided to the firms / organizations implementing the projects. The information showing financial assistance released under the scheme for technology upgradation / establishment / modernization of FPI projects in different States during last three years is annexed. 100% FDI is already permitted in food processing sector except in food retailing, plantations and alcoholic beverages. Inflow of FDI received in the food processing sector during last three years was reported to be Rs. 861.47 crore.
