(b) the reasons for opening of more regional offices; and

(c) the steps proposed to restrict the administrative expenditure?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF POWER ( SHRIMATI JAYAWANTI MEHTA )

(a) & (b) : POWERGRID is maintaining a vast network of Transmission Systems spread across the country. With a view to facilitate effective Grid management and smooth operation and maintenance of the Transmission System and the construction activities, a hierarchical system has been established in POWERGRID by creating Regional set ups. These Regional Offices help in faster decision making and focused attention on activities resulting in better project management and improved availability of Transmission System.

Initially, the development of Power Sector was based on Regional self- sufficiency concept and for this Indian Power Sector was divided into 5 Regions namely Northern, Western, Eastern, North-Eastern and Southern Regions. POWERGRID evolved its Regional structure in line with the above concept and, accordingly, five Regions were formed. Subsequently, keeping in view the size and geographical spread of Transmission System, Northern Region and Southern Region have been bifurcated into two different administrative entities in each of these Regions to ensure effective management of activities. The details of the regional offices of POWERGRID in the country are given at Annex.

(c) : The decisions relating to administrative expenditure are taken by POWERGRID based on sound commercial principles.
