Question : AGRICULTURE AND HORTICULTURE



(a) the estimated loss of foodgrain due to flood and cyclone of 1999 and drought in 2000 in the country;

(b) the specific steps taken to promote agriculture and horticulture in the cyclone, flood and drought affected and drought prone areas in the States;

(c) the plan formulated during 2000-2001; and

(d) the details of the Central assistance provided to each State?

(a) Despite natural calamities affecting different parts of country, the foodgrain production during this year is estimated to be 205.91 million tonnes.

(b) & (c) Various measures like concerted efforts towards technology upgradation and its induction in the farming system, timely and adequate availability of various inputs such as fertilisers and seeds and promotion of their optimal use, surveillance of pests and the remedial measures and other managerial endeavours have been taken to manage the agriculture sector effectively.

(d) During 2000-01, Central share of Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) has been released to States for undertaking necessary relief measures in the wake of natural calamities. Details of State-wise releases are at Annexure.
