Question : Loan Waiver to Farmers

(a) whether it is necessary to formulate farm loan waiver scheme for farmers in the country and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the debt ridden farmers of various States are compelled to take extreme inhuman steps like suicide;
(c) if so, whether the Government proposes to waive off the loan extended to the families of such farmers who take extreme steps like suicide due to financial constraints;
(d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor;
(e) whether the Government has formulated any loan waiver scheme in various States of the country and if so, the details thereof; and
(f) whether the Government proposes any further schemes in this regard and if so, the details thereof?

(a): No, Sir.
(b): The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs compiles and disseminates information on suicides, in its publication titled ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI)’. These Reports on suicides are available upto 2015 on its website. The Report for 2016 onwards has not been published.
(c): No, Sir. However, Government has initiated various schemes for the benefit of farmers and doubling their income such as Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAmman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), Interest subvention for short-term crop loan upto Rs.3 lakhs etc.
