Question : Erosion of Brahmaputra River

(a) whether the Government is aware of the fact that acute erosion is continuing at different locations of Mediertari, Fakirganj, Salmara and Hazirhat area on south bank of river Brahmaputra in Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar districts of Assam;
(b) if so, the details of total area which has been eroded away and the numbers of families affected by the erosion during the last three years;
(c) the details of families who were rehabilitated/ allotted patta land during the said period; and
(d) the steps taken by the Government to control the eroding situation in the area?

(a) The Government is aware about the erosion of river Brahmaputra on its left bank at various locations of Mediertari, Fakirganj, South Salmara and Hazirhat area in the district of Dhubri, South Salmara and Mankachar.

(b) & (c) Information is being collected from the State Government.


(d) The various schemes/projects for protection of the area taken up by the Water Resources Department, Government of Assam during last five years are as follows-

i. Immediate measures for restoration of road cum bund on left bank of river Brahmaputra from Pampara to Baladoba in Fakirganj area under SDRF 2016-17. Estimated Amount : Rs.648.55 Lakh.
ii. Restoration of existing bund connecting Naga bund at South Salmara and PMGSY road at Saikhowa under SDRF 2016-17. Estimated Amount :Rs.89.33 Lakh.
iii. Channelization of river Brahmaputra for development of navigability in Dhubri-Hatsigimari channel. Estimated Amount :Rs.2169.00 Lakh.
iv. Restoration & recoupment of breach like damage of road cum bund by flooding of river Brahmaputra on L/B at Fakirganj area under SOPD (FDR). Estimated Amount :Rs.293.63 Lakh.

v. Restoration & recoupment of breach like damage of road cum bund by flooding of river Brahmaputra at Nichinpur area under SOPD (FDR). Estimated Amount :Rs.651.02 Lakh.
vi. Restoration & recoupment of B/dyke from Fakirganj to Hazirhat (Bund connecting Nugabund to PMGSY Road from Salmara College to Saikhowa) under SDRF for 2019-20. Estimated Amount : Rs.98.31 Lakh.
vii. Immediate measures for restoration of road cum bund from Molakhowa to Kathalbari under SDRF 2019-20. Estimated Amount : Rs.78.00 Lakh.

Further, the Water Resources Department, Government of Assam has prepared a proposal having nomenclature “A/E measures to protect Fakirganj to Hazirhat area from the erosion of river Brahmaputra on its south bank” at an estimated cost of Rs.249.40 Cr which is contemplated to be taken up under loan assistance from Asian Development Bank (ADB).
