(a) & (b): Apart from thirty one National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and
twenty Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) already functioning in various parts
of the country, including an NIT and IIM in Karnataka, there is no proposal for
setting up of any new NIT or IIM.
(c): The Government has launched several initiatives viz. National Institutional
Ranking Framework (NIRF), Impacting Research Innovation & Technology
(IMPRINT), Uchchtar Avishkar Yojna (UAY), Global Initiative of Academic
Networks (GIAN) and Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) etc., which
have in-built mechanisms to check and provide for qualitative development of
education in the country. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has
prescribed norms and standards for grant of approval to the new Institutions and
existing Institutions. The University Grants Commission undertakes maintenance
of standards in teaching, research and quality assurance in Universities, Deemed
to be Universities and Colleges through framing and notifying regulations,
schemes and disbursing grants to the eligible Institutions.
(d): Requests have been received from various quarters for setting up of IIMs
in States of Telangana, Puducherry and Karnataka.
