Question : LAUNCHES OF NEW DRUGS



(a) whether the Government has notified National Pharmaceutical Pricing Policy- 2012 and brought medicine/formulations under the price control;

(b) if so, whether launch of new drugs in the country have come down after notification of National Pharmaceutical Pricing Policy-2012;

(c) if so, the reaction of the Government thereto; and

(d) the steps taken by the Government to encourage/promote launches of new drugs in the country?

(a): Yes Madam. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Policy (NPPP), 2012 was notified on 7th December, 2012. Based on the overarching framework set by NPPP-2012, Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO) 2013 was brought out which provides for controlling the prices of essential medicines appearing in National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) 2011.

(b): No such study has been conducted by the Department of Pharmaceuticals.

(c): In view of reply to (b) above, does not arise.

(d): NPPP-2012 and DPCO-2013 provides incentives and opportunity for innovation and competition so as to support the growth of pharma industry thereby meeting the goals of employment and shared economic well- being for all.
