Question : INDO UN TALKS



(a) whether the UN Secretary General visited India recently and if so, the details of discussions held during the said visit;

(b) whether issues like ceasefire violation and infiltration from Pakistan came up during the talks;

(c) if so, the details along with the response of UN in this regard;

(d) whether the role of Indian soldiers in peace keeping missions abroad was hailed by the UN Secretary General; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) The UN Secretary General (UNSG), Ban Ki-moon visited India from 10-13 January 2015. During the visit, UNSG called on the President and Prime Minister and held discussions with the Hon`ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister, Defence Minister and the Minister of Environment & Forests. During the meetings, the main issues deliberated included UN reform in the 70th Anniversary Year of UN in 2015, early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT), India`s contribution to the UN peacekeeping operations, Climate Change, adoption of Sustainable Development Goals at the forthcoming UNGA Session in September 2015. UN Secretary General also participated in the Vibrant Gujarat Summit held at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

(b) & (c) During the meetings of the UN Secretary General, no discussions on ceasefire violation and infiltration from Pakistan were held.

(d) & (e) UN Secretary General in his official interactions, expressed appreciation for India`s significant contribution to UN peacekeeping operations globally.
