Question : Nuclear Reactors-Plants

(a) the number of operational, under construction and sanctioned nuclear reactors/plants in the country along with their location;

(b) the name of the foreign collaboration for each of these plants;

(c)the power generated during the last three years in the operational reactors, plant-wise;

(d) whether the Government is taking any steps to increase the efficiency of these reactors and if so, the details thereof; and

(e) whether the Government plans to take up any nuclear projects in the State of Himachal Pradesh and if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES & PENSIONS AND PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (Dr. JITENDRA SINGH) :

(a)There are twenty-one (21) nuclear power reactors in the country of which 20 are under operation. One reactor, Rajasthan Atomic Power Station Unit 1 (RAPS–1) (100 MWe) is presently under extended shutdown for techno-economic assessment for continued operations. In addition, ten more reactors are in various stages of implementation.

(b)The details are given in Annexure -1.

(c)The plant wise generation for the last three years in respect of the nuclear power reactors under operation is given in Annexure - 2.

(d)Yes Sir; The Indian Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) technology which started with an unit size of 220 MWe was progressively upgraded to 540 MWe and now to 700 MW per unit. In view of the on-going efforts in improving performance, the Indian nuclear power reactors have consistently operated at high Availability Factors and Plant Load Factors.

(e)There is no proposal to set up a nuclear power plant in Himachal Pradesh at present.
