Question : NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE GRID



(a) whether the Government proposes to set up a National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) so as to access real time intelligence data;

(b) if so, the details thereof alongwith the salient features;

(c) whether concerns relating to intrusion of privacy, in the proposed NATGRID have been amicably resolved;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the time by which the NATGRID is likely to become operational?

STATEMENT IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (e) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION. NO. 399 FOR 07.12.2010.

(a) to (e): Government of India has set up National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), as an attached office of Ministry of Home Affairs with effect from 1.12.2009. NATGRID will link data bases for constructing actionable intelligence to combat terrorism and internal security threats. As such, NATGRID has been set up to create a facility that improves India’s capability to counter internal security threats. The Detailed Project Report will be submitted in December, 2010. After approval of the competent authority, it is expected that the first phase will be operational in 12-18 months thereafter. An institutional structure for oversight over NATGRID would be created consisting of an Apex Steering Council, an Operations Committee and an Independent Audit Committee to take care of concerns of privacy etc.
