(a) whether Special Economic Zone (SEZ) are proposed to be set up at various cities/towns in the country;

(b) if so, the broad features of the projected SEZ alongwith their locations;

(c) the steps taken so far in that direction; and

(a) New Special Economic Zone (SEZ) are being set up in the public, private, joint sector or by the State Governments.

(b) to (d): A statement is laid on the Table of the House.

(b): Approval has so far been given for setting up 25 SEZs on the basis of proposals received from State Governments and their agencies and private promoters. Broad features of the approved SEZs are indicated in the annexure.

(c) & (d): The new SEZs are in the nature of large infrastructure projects with a long gestation period Of the 25 SEZs approved for establishment, SEZs at Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Salt Lake (West Bengal), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Jodhpur (Rajasthan) and Moradabad (U.P.) are now ready for operation. The other SEZs are at various stages of implementation. Since the SEZs have been approved for establishment in the private/joint sector or by the State Governments, it is not possible to indicate a time frame by which the Zones are likely to be set up. However,periodic meetings are held by the Department of Commerce with the promoters of SEZs to expedite the projects.
