Question : PRODUCTION OF SILK



(a) the details of silk production in the country during each of the last three years, State-wise and Union Territory-wise;

(b) the details of funds provided for silk production during each of the last three years ,State-wise and Union Territory-wise;

(c) the details of the targets fixed and achievements made for production of seeds under the Central Silkworm Seed Committee, State and Union Territory-wise;

(d) the details of funds provided for this purpose during each of the last three years, State-wise and Union Territory-wise;

(e) the details of demand and availability of silkworm seeds in the country;

(f) whether the demand of silkworm seed is more than its availability;

(g) if so, the measures taken to increase its production; and

(h) the details of achievements made in this regard?

(a) : The details of State-wise Raw Silk production in the country for the last three years 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 is given in Annexure-I.

(b) : Catalytic Development Programme (CDP) is the flagship Scheme of the Government for promoting production of silk in the country. During the last three years i.e., 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07, Government of India through Central Silk Board has spent/released Rs.48.44 crores, Rs.68.57 crores and 64.22 crores respectively. A Statement giving State-wise and year-wise details of amount spent/released under CDP during the last three years is given in Annexure-II.

(c):The Central Silkworm Seed Committee under the Central Silk Board (Amendment) Act 2006 is yet to be formally constituted. The primary function of this Committee would be monitoring of quality of the seed production in the country.

(d):Under the mulberry sector, there were no exclusive Schemes for seed production during the X Plan. However, under the Vanya Silk sector, funds were released for the Schemes like upgradation of seed multiplication infrastructure, support to seed rearers, support to Pvt. Graineurs etc. The Table below indicates the details of funds released during the last three years of X Plan.Details of funds provided by CSB under the Catalytic Development Scheme to the States/Union Territories for improving the production of silkworm seed during the last three years (2004-05 to 2006-07) of X Plan is given below:

(e)& (f): The demand of Silkworm Seed is fully met by the agencies involved in seed production and there is no shortage. The availability/production of mulberry and non-mulberry silkworm seed in the country during the last three years is given below:
