Question : HEPATITIS B AND C VACCINES



(a) the extent of Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV) prevalence and their risk factors among HIV positive and negative population in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the action taken/ proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b) The extent of Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C prevalence among HIV positive and negative population in the country is not known. The risk of acquiring Hepatitis C (HCV) is through contaminated needles and Hepatitis B through contaminated needles and unsafe sex.

(c) Universal precautions including use of sterilized syringes and needles in the hospitals and health centres is promoted. Under the National AIDS Control Programme, health educational activities are being carried out about risk of intravenous drug use.
