(a): As per the Guidelines for improving water use efficiency in irrigation, domestic & industrial sectors - 2014 of the Central Water Commission (CWC), the prevalent water use for irrigation accounted 78% followed by domestic use 6%, industries 5%, power development 3% and others activities is about 8%.
(b): The net sown area in the country is 140130 thousand ha. As per available information, the area covered under drip irrigation is 4374.53 thousand ha. The State wise percentage of drip irrigation area to the net sown area is Annexed.
(c): The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) is being implemented in various States of the country from the year 2015-16. The status of implementation of components of PMKSY is as under:
I. PMKSY-Per Drop More Crop (PDMC): Focuses on enhancing water use efficiency at farm level through Micro Irrigation technologies viz. Drip and Sprinkler Irrigation. An area of 36.20 lakh ha has been covered during 2015-16 to 2018-19 in the country.
This component is being implemented by Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare.

II. PMKSY-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) and Har Khet Ko Pani (HKKP): During 2016-17, ninety-nine (99) on-going Major/Medium irrigation projects under PMKSY - AIBP, having ultimate irrigation potential of 76.03 lakh ha. have been prioritized in consultation with States, for completion in phases up to December, 2019 along with their Command Area Development & Water Management (CADWM) works.
Irrigation potential of 17.54 lakh ha. have been created during last three years under PMKSY-AIBP. Under HKKP, irrigation potential of 2.18 lakh ha have been created through Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI) and Repair Renovation and Restoration of Water Bodies (RRR) schemes during last three years.
These components are being implemented by Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation.
III. PMKSY-Watershed Development (WDC): The WDC is principally for development of rainfed and degraded areas.8214 watershed development projects in 28 States (except Goa) sanctioned under erstwhile Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), were amalgamated as Watershed Development Component (WDC) of PMKSY in 2015-16. From 2015-16 to 2018-19, 4.78 lakh water harvesting structures have been created/rejuvenated and an additional area of 10.98 Lakh ha has been brought under protective irrigation.
This component is being implemented by Department of Land Resources.
