Question : RIVER WATER DISPUTES



(a) whether the water between the States under dispute is being shared in accordance with the Bachawat Award and judgements of other tribunals without any disputes and conflicts among the riparian States;

(b) if so, the details thereof State-wise, particularly Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu; and

(c) if not, the reasons therefor and action taken thereon?

(a) to (c) The planning, development and management of water resources of Cauvery, Krishna and Godavari basins is carried out as per the decisions of the respective Tribunals notified in the Official Gazette.

Shares of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the concerned river basins are given in the following table.

#Shares of concerned States in Godavari basin were not specified by the Tribunal. Decision of the Tribunal is based on the Agreements reached between/among party States providing for location/project specific utilization of water.

The term of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II has been extended for making project specific allocation, if such allocation has not been made by a Tribunal and determine an operational protocol for project-wise release of water in the event of deficit flows in terms of Section 89 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014. Further, in accordance with the said Act, the Central Government has constituted the Krishna River Management Board and Godavari River Management Board for the administration, regulation, maintenance and operation of projects on rivers Krishna and Godavari respectively vide Gazette Notification dated 28th May, 2014.
