(a): At present, thirty one National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are
functioning in the country.
(b) & (c): Amongst thirty one NITs, ten new NITs were established by the
Government of India in the year 2010, including six new NITs in the States /
Union Territories of Arunachal Pradesh, Delhi, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland
and Puducherry in respect of which the Union Cabinet in its meeting held on 22nd
January, 2020 has approved the revised cost of Rs.4,371.90 crore till financial
year 2021-2022, as per details given below:

(d) to (e): NITs are autonomous Institutions of national importance governed
by the provisions of the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and
Research (NITSER) Act, 2007 and the Statutes framed under the Act. As NITs
are autonomous Institutions, therefore, they decide the number of seats in
various courses. The seats in NITs keep on increasing at both undergraduate
and postgraduate levels as and when new courses are introduced or new
Departments are opened in these Institutes.
