Question : Yoga in Schools

(a) whether the Government has decided to make yoga mandatory in all Central Government run schools including Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Government has released course material and syllabus for yoga designed by National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for classes VI to X and if so, the details thereof;
(d) whether the Government has also developed training module on yoga under teacher education programme and if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the other steps taken/being taken by the Government to strictly enforce imparting of yoga by trained teachers in these schools?

(a) & (b) Yoga is not a compulsory subject in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs). However, Yoga is taken up as a part of sports and physical activity in these schools.

(c) Syllabus on Yoga from Upper Primary to Secondary Stage has been developed by NCERT and two books on Yoga for Upper Primary (VI to VIII) and Secondary Stages (IX & X) were released during celebration of International Yoga Day.

(d) & (e) NCTE has also developed modules on Yoga Education for Diploma in Elementary Education, Bachelor of Education and Master of Education Programmes. Yoga Education has been made a compulsory area of study and practice by all teacher educators and would-be teachers (student-teachers).
