(a) & (b) : As per information available, total number of accidents, persons killed and persons injured on the National Highway in Rajasthan for the last three years from 1999 to 2001 is given below:

(c) : Enforcement of provisions of Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 for improved road safety is entirely the responsibility of State Government. Government of India has been undertaking a number of engineering and educational measures to prevent road accidents in the country as a whole including the State of Rajasthan. Some of the important steps being taken by the Government besides highway design to check the road accidents in the country are as under:

(1)	Provision of crane and ambulance to State Government/Non-Government Organisations under National Highways Accident Relief Service Scheme.

(2) Assistance for setting up of Driving Training Schools.

(3) Provision of refresher training to drivers of heavy motor vehicles.

(4) Publicity campaign on road safety awareness through audio-visual-print media.

(5) Grants-in-aid to voluntary organizations for administering road safety programmes.

(6) Encouraging use of simulators in driver`s training.

(7) Institution of National Award for voluntary organizations/individuals for outstanding work in the field of road safety.

(8) Organising All India Essay Competition on road safety for school children with a view to create awareness.

(9) Tightening of fitness norms for transport vehicles.

(10) Widening /improvement of roads. etc.
