Question : Slums in India

(a) the total number of slums in India and their population, State-wise;

(b) the list of the top hundred slums in India in terms of population size and their location, State-wise;

(c) whether the Government has assessed and recorded informal and ‘unrecognised’ slum settlements;

(d) if so, the details thereof including the total number of such unrecognised slums and total inhabitants in those slums; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) : As per Census of India 2011, a total of 6.54 crore population is living in slums, State-wise slum population is at Annexure. As per the estimation done by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) during 69th Round on Urban Slums in India, 2012, 33,510 slums exist in the urban areas of India.

(b) to (e): Since ‘Land’ and ‘Colonization’ are State subjects, therefore, data on slums is being maintained by States/Union Territories (UTs).
