Question : PRODUCTION OF MAIZE



(a) whether the Government proposes to increase the production of maize in the country including Uttar Pradesh;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government proposes to set up maize based industry in Uttar Pradesh;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the time by which it is likely to be done?

(a)&(b): The Government of India (GOI) is already implementing a Centrally Sponsored Integrated Scheme of Oilseeds, Pulses, Oil Palm and Maize(ISOPOM) in the country w.e.f. 1.4.2004. An amount of Rs.1689 lakh was approved for Uttar Pradesh as Central Share in 2009-10 under ISOPOM for pulses, oilseeds and maize. Pulses has been shifted to National Food Security Mission from April, 2010.

Assistance is provided under ISOPOM to the States/Implementing Agencies for several components viz; production and purchase of breeder seed, production of foundation and certified seed, distribution of certified seed, development of seed infrastructure, seed minikits, block, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and frontline demonstration, plant protection chemicals, weedicides, Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV), rhyzobium/phosphate solbulising bacteria culture, gypsum/pyrite/lime, sprinkler sets, micro-nutrients, farm implements, irrigation pipes, trainings publicity, staff and contingency etc.

Government of India also provides assistance for maize under Macro- Management of Agriculture (MMA) scheme for States not covered under ISOPOM and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana on approval by the State Level Sanctioning Committee(SLSC).

(c) to (e): The Ministry of Food Processing Industries provides grant-in-aid to food processing units including grain processing sector under its scheme of “Technology Upgradation, Modernization and Establishment of Food Processing Units” by way of 25% of cost of plant and machinery and technical civil work up to Rs.50.00 lakh in general areas and 33% of cost of plant and machinery and technical civil work upto Rs.75.00 lakh in difficult areas. 10 units in flour sector with a grant –in-aid of Rs.162.675 lakh in the year 2009-10 have already been assisted in Uttar Pradesh.
