Question : INDO NEPAL EXTRADITION TREATY .



(a) whether a new Indo-Nepal extradition treaty is on the anvil;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the reasons for which it has been required to change the modalities of existing extradition treaty; and

(d) the time by which it is likely to come into force?

(a) the question of updating the Extradition Treaty of 1953 between India and Nepal was discussed during the visit of a delegation lead by Shri Kamal Pande, Home Secretary, Government of India, to Nepal from July 4 -7, 2000 for Home Secretary-level talks.

(b), (c) & (d) During those discussions, the two sides agreed on the need for updating of the existing bilateral extradition arrangements in keeping with the requirements of their law enforcement agencies and the changed nature of crimes. It was agreed that the experts of the two sides would meet shortly to hold discussions on a draft of the revised bilateral extradition arrangements and submit its report to the two Governments at an early date.
