Question : SMUGGLING OF FOODGRAINS



(a) whether smuggling of foodgrains have been reported on the Indo-Nepal Border;

(b) if so, the details of cases reported during the last three years and the current year; and

(c) the steps taken by the Government to check such illegal activities on the said border?

(a) to (c): The India-Nepal border is open and porous in nature. Incidences of trans-border criminal activities are some time reported including smuggling of food grains. Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has been deployed on Indo-Nepal border as Border Guarding Force.

As per the information available data on smuggling of food grains during the last three years and the current year, are as follows:

Regular presence and round-the-clock patrolling and surveillance are carried out by SSB. Border Out Posts, Observation Posts at various points have been established. The State Governments of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim have also been requested to take effective action to stop the trans-border criminal activities including smuggling of food grains.
