Question : TRAINING TO HANDLOOM WEAVERS



(a) Whether the Government propose to impart training under various schemes to the weavers of handloom sector in North-Eastern States particularly in Nagaland to get them adapted to the new techniques of weaving, dyeing and diversifying of handloom products;

(b) if so, the number of training centres proposed to be opened for the purpose, State-wise; and

(c) the time by which these training centers are likely to be opened?

(a) Government has been implementing schemes for imparting training to the handloom weavers to get them adapted to the new techniques of weaving, dyeing and diversifying of handloom products. Provision for such training has been existing under the following schemes :


(i) Decentralised Training of Weavers Scheme

(ii) Deen Dayal Hathkargha Protsahan Yojana, and

(iii) Development of Exportable Products and their Marketing Scheme


(b)&(c)Under the Decentralised Training of Weavers Scheme, training is provided to handloom weavers at or near their place of work or residence; that is, in the handloom cluster itself. The training is overseen by the 24 Weavers` Service Centres already functioning under the Ministry of Textiles in various parts of the country, of which the Centres at Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal are catering to the needs of the handloom weavers of the North-Eastern States, with the centre at Imphal covering the training needs of weavers of Nagaland. As for the handloom weavers of the state of Nagaland, the existing arrangements have been found adequate.
