Question : AFFORESTATION PROGRAMME BY CCL



(a) whether Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) has taken any steps for ecology development particularly for afforestation;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the number of plants planted by CCL during each of the last three years and the current year;

(d) the number of plants surviving out of those plants planted during the period; and

(e) the steps taken/being taken for proper maintenance and growth of the plants as part of its afforestation programme and the success achieved thereon?

(a) & (b): Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) has taken steps on continuous basis for ecological development of mining areas. The mined out areas are refilled with overburden at places where no mining is required in future. The dumped soil is improved by adding nutrients like organic, inorganic and bio fertilizers for plantation of trees. Since 1992 CCL has planted more than 77 lakh plants covering an area of about 4780 Ha in different mines of the company. It has also helped in sequestration of carbon in terrestrial eco system.

(c) & (d): Details of number of plants planted by CCL in the last three years and the current year as also the number of plants surviving are furnished in the table below:
