Question : DEFENSIVE WALLS ON SEA SHORES OF KERALA



(a) the length of defensive walls constructed on the sea-shores of Kerala;

(b) whether the Government are aware of the frequent damage of sea-shores in the monsoon season in the state;

(c) if so, whether the request have been received from the State in this regard; and

(d) if so, the action taken or proposed to be taken by the Government to prevent the damage of houses and land ?

(a) As reported by the Govt. of Kerala, construction of 368.48 km of new seawall and 83.95 km of reformation of old seawall has been carried out upto March 2000. The anticipated physical achievement for the remaining two years of the 9th Five Year Plan is 5.825 km of new seawall and 3.947 km of reformation of old seawall.

(c) & (d) Yes, Sir. Central Water Commission received a proposal, for Central Assistance from the Government of Kerala, which includes construction of sea walls covering a length of 1880 m between Azhikode & Eriyadu at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.00 crores. Clarifications sought from the State Government on the proposal have since been received and are under examination.

Central Water Commission received another proposal for construction of 78 kms of new sea wall, 58 kms of reformation work and 23 numbers of groynes for inclusion in the National Coastal Protection Project at an estimated cost of Rs. 267.47 crores. Certain modifications have been suggested to the proposal. The revised proposal from State Government is awaited.
