(a) to (d): A statement is laid on the Table of the House.
Statement referred to in reply to Lok Sabha Starred Question No. 49 due for reply on 26.11.2014 regarding ‘Norms for Pollution Control’ by SHRI BIDYUT BARAN MAHATO AND SHRI C.R. CHAUDHARY, Hon’ble Members of Parliament.
(a) &(b) Yes, Madam. The Government has notified environmental norms with respect to sixty one (61) category of polluting industries to control pollution at source in the country (Annexure-I). These norms are to be complied with by the industries before disposal of treated effluent and emissions.
(c) & (d) There are a total of 3206 industries falling under 17 categories of highly polluting industries identified by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). During last three years, a total of 48 industries including seventeen Iron& Steel Plants have been found violating the prescribed norms by the CPCB. Directions have been issued in respect of twenty two (22) units under sub-section 18(1) (b) of the Air (Prevention and Control of pollution) Act, 1981 to respective State Pollution Control Boards apart from Directions under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 to remaining 26 units.
In the state of Jharkhand directions under section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 have been issued to three (3) Iron & Steel Plants of Jharkhand apart from direction under section 18(1)(b) of the Air(Prevention and Control of pollution) Act 1981 to Jharkhand Pollution Control Board in respect of other two(2) Iron & Steel Plants for ensuring compliance.
