Question : URBAN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

(a) whether the Union Government grants assistance to the States in the matter of Urban Solid Waste Management;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government proposes to launch Urban Solid Waste Management Mission for disposal of urban waste in the country;

(d) if so, the details thereof alongwith the names of the cities identified so far under the said Mission in the country including Uttar Pradesh, State-wise; and

(e) the funds allocated/proposed to be allocated for the purpose, State-wise?

STATEMENT

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.404 FOR 31.7.2009 REGARDING URBAN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT.

Solid Waste Management Projects in urban areas are eligible for assistance under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT). So far, Ministry has accorded approval to 40 Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) projects for 37 cities/urban areas at an estimated cost of Rs.2,186.14 crore under JNNURM. Funds have been released for 51 MSWM projects at an estimated cost of Rs.327.02 crore under UIDSSMT. List of SWM projects under JNNURM & UIDSSMT are at Annexure-I & II respectively.

Central assistance has also been provided under the scheme for Solid Waste Management & Drainage in 10 selected Airfield Towns at an estimated cost of Rs.130.67 crore to mitigate bird hit problems. The details of the assistance provided under the scheme are at Annexure-III. Assistance for 5 Solid Waste Management projects has also been provided under the 10% lump sum scheme for North East Region including Sikkim. Another five projects in North East shall be supported under the North Eastern Region Urban Development Programme (NERUDP) Phase-I (Annexure-IV).

The Government of India does not propose to launch a separate Solid Waste Management Mission since these projects are eligible for assistance under JNNURM & UIDSSMT.
