Question : PENDING EXCISE CASES



(a) whether as on 1.4.99 there were 47,911 cases of adjudication in excise cases involving over Rs.8,060 crore were pending in comparison to 47,911 cases on 1.4.1998;

(b) if so, the number of those cases and since been adjudicated and the amount of excise duty recovered;

(c) the position of pending adjudication cases as on April 1, 2000 and March 1,2001 and money involved therein;

(d) whether Chief Commissioners and Commissioners of Central Excise were asked by the Government for time bound disposal of the cases but those authorities have miserably failed in the execution of the orders; and

(e) if so, the concrete measures the Government propose to take to liquidate the pending adjudicated excise cases and to check the large scale evasion of excise duty all over the country?
