Question : DEGREES OF M. PHIL. PH.D. NET AND SLET



(a) whether the Degrees of M.Phil., Ph.D., National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) are adjudged at par by the Government;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree holders are eligible for appearing in all University examinations including lecturers examination; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): No, Sir. Degrees of M.Phil and Ph.D are not treated at par. National Eligibility Test (NET)/State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) are not degrees but examinations conducted by University Grants Commission (UGC) and States to assess the scholastic achievements of candidates in a particular filed of learning. M.Phil./Ph.D. degrees are awarded according to the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M. Phil / Ph. D. Degree), Regulation, 2009.

(c) & (d): According to the University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications required for the appointment and Career Advancement of teachers in Universities and Institutions affiliated to it) (3rd Amendment), Regulation 2009, National Eligibility Test (NET)/State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) are compulsory minimum eligibility condition for recruitment and appointment of Lecturers in Universities/ Colleges/Institutions of the National Importance.
