Question : Safe City Project

(a) the details of the works taken up in Bengaluru under the ‘Safe City’ project;

(b) whether experts are of the opinion that installing CCTV surveillance and other such infrastructure may help in solving crimes, but are unsuccessful in deterring them; and

(c) if so, the steps being taken by the Government to ensure higher safety for women in metropolitan city like Bengaluru?

(a) to (c) : As per available information, Bengaluru Safe City project involves use of technology to aid smart policing and safety management of women and includes:

i. Enabling secure environment for women in identifying public places through enhanced surveillance, GIS based crime mapping, deploying police vans in hotspots, setting up women police outposts and safety zones for women in vulnerable areas.

ii. Integrated support and counselling of women victims through deployment of trained volunteers, helpdesks in police stations and hospitals.

iii. Gender sensitization of police and community awareness on crimes against women.
These measures are likely to act as deterrent and increase women safety at public places apart from facilitating enhanced prediction capability leading to better preventive action by police.
